NYPAA Celebrates 20th Year Anniversary Dinner & Dance and Officers Induction

The North York Pinoy Athletic Association (NYPAA) celebrated its twentieth founding anniversary and induction ceremonies on November 16, 2019 at QSSIS Banquet Hall, Scarborough. NYPAA, a not-for-profit organization, is an active participant of various community activities, supports youth basketball clinics and participates at various basketball leagues including Ontario Basketball Association (OBA) as North York Aquilas and inter-city tournaments in Canada and the USA as a member of the North American Basketball Association (NABA).

Honourable Salma Zahid, MP graced the event and inducted the new sets of officers, directors and team coaches.  She conveyed her warmest personal greetings to NYPAA families and congratulated newly elected officers who worked tirelessly to make this event successful.  She also expressed her appreciation to the membership for bringing families together and providing a channel to spend quality time together while fostering active lifestyles through sports.  In October 2018, MP Zahid introduced in her private member's motion M-155, designating June as Filipino Heritage Month across Canada, was unanimously passed by the House of Commons.

Among those sworn into office for a 2-year term were: Brendalete Agoncillo - President, Jong Lee - Vice-President, Vivian Musni & Marites Tendenilla - Secretaries, Cheche Lee & Melanie Corpuz - Treasurers, Celeste Vega – Auditor, Marc Victoria, Irvin Gahite & Jong Lee - Sports Commissioners, Sharonne Salanguit  - OBA Rep Director & Communication, Victor Montero - Youth Sports Development Officer, Tony San Juan – Adviser, Ed Sotto, Ed Prima, Jong Lee, Victor Montero, Patrick Memita, Sherwin Borreta, Keach Delos Trinos, Marc Victoria, Jhun Vega, Renato Columbano & Irvin Gahite - Team Coaches, Cheche Lee & Irvin Gahite – Webmasters and Edgar Sotto, Vilma Tahsin, Roger Tarca, Bob San Juan, Sharonne Salanguit & Victor Montero - members of the Board of Directors.

Hon. Michael Levitt, M.P. York Centre offered his congratulations and commended NYPAA for its active role in the community.  Likewise, Mayor John Tory extended his warm greetings and best wishes for a memorable celebration and continued success on behalf of the Toronto City Council.

Emceed by Ms. Conida Haley, Miss Philippines PIDC-2015, the highly entertaining evening's program included: slideshow presentations, raffle draws, special performances by JJ Belles, Barbie Doma and OHANA with music & sound from DJ James Correa and photos from John Sulio of ASVPShooter Photography.  Those who joined in as special guests were: Mr. Gani Gregorio - NABA Founder & Adviser & Susan Gregorio; Maureen Simpson & Daisy Stone of Antibes C.C.; Bebot & Marilou Silva, Bong & Erlie Zapanza of Fil-Act; George Lalata of FBA of Durham; Sal & Sherlyn Santillan of Durham Rising Suns and other notable friends and supporters of NYPAA.

NYPAA is composed of dedicated volunteer parents, professionals, students and youths in the Filipino Canadian community who are engaged, for the past twenty years, to continue to deliver on its mission in response to the demands of growing families in the community, promoting athletic activities as a more productive means of spending leisure time for parents and their children, especially in today's digital fast-paced environment.
