George and Dolly Poblete recently celebrated another milestone, their 63rd wedding anniversary.

The Pobletes have been very active members of the Filipino-Canadian community for over 50 years. In their early years, they helped build better youth in the Montreal and Toronto community through sports, particularly in the field of Self-Defense and Judo. Later in life, they prominently figured in the activities of civic organizations, like the Knights of Rizal. In their eighties, the Pobletes still are very much into their religious involvement. They help in their parish events and until recently they have taught the Rosary in Toronto Catholic Schools. They are vital to the formation and coordination of the activities of the Block Rosary Group in Toronto, which was established in 1982. George is a Knights of Columbus active leader and a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre. Dolly is a member of the Carmelite Order (OCDS) and Holy Sepulchre.

For their community involvement, George has received numerous local and international citations and awards from the Vatican, U.S.A., U.K., Canada, Japan, Philippines and Venezuela. Prominent among these distinctions, George received the Pro Patria Presidential Medal  which was given to an individual by the President of the Philippines to an individual – Filipino or foreigner alike, who has rendered outstanding work in stimulating and encouraging works towards the Rizalian concept of love of country and fulfillment of duties of citizenship. He also received the Queen’s Sovereign Medal for Volunteers (2017), which handed out at Sussex Drive in Ottawa by Canada’s Governor General, in recognition of his over sixty years of volunteerism in Canada, South America and the Philippines.

The Pobletes, are blessed with six children and 14 grandchildren, who are all supportive of their civic and religious undertakings.

Notable amongst the greetings the Pobletes received on their 63rd wedding anniversary were from: Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and Canada’s Governor General, the Hon. Julia Payette.
