Norma Carpio

Filipino Community Leader and Founder of Mabuhay Philippines Festival

In 1998, the Filipino Canadian community was on the cusp of celebrating the centenary year of the Philippine's Independence Day; our "Araw ng Kalayaan". Then Norma Carpio, a dedicated and charismatic business & community leader, thought of having the commemoration on a different perspective. She recognized that there was a great need to meet the challenge of creating a solid vehicle to showcase what is best about the Philippines and its people in a cornucopia of relevant events, shows, parade, beauty pageant, entertainment and other family friendly activities, entertwining the past and the present. Ergo, the Mabuhay Philippines Festival was born. The festival began as a private initiative spearheaded by Mrs. Carpio then when she was elected Predident of PIDC in the year 2000, it became the signature celebratory event of PIDC eventually gaining the reputation as the "festival of festivals".

Recently Norma Carpio was a recipient of the Most Outstanding Filipinos in the US, Canada and the Philippines Award by the Bb. Pilipinas of the World 2019 at the Marriott Hotel Toronto
Over the years, PIDC had for its many celebrations, usually during the August month, offered several celebration themes: "Pinagmulan" (2013), "Kulay" (2015), "Pagdiriwang" (2016), "Kasaysayan" (2017), "Kinabukasan" (2018) and now, "Pamana", which fittingly the initial year celebrating "Filipino Heritage Month", unanimously passed in the House of Commons on October 30, 2018. Thus, in effect PIDC has scored a several "firsts" in community events, i.e. 1) the first to organize a multi-day event to celebrate Philippine culture; 2) the first to partner with Harbourfront Centre; 3) the first to organize a three-day event at Toronto City Hall; 4) the first to form a street parade on its yearly celebration; 5) the first to hold a Filipino Festival at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre; 6) the first to partner with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce Toronto; 7) the first to organize a three-day multi-category amateur basketball tournament; 8) the first to partner with Kalayaan Centre to hold a Gala; 9) the first to partner with TFC Kapamilya/ ABS-CBN network bringing leading Philippine Artists and Entertainers; 10) the first to hold a Fashion Show showcasing the rare collections and intricate designs by renowned International Filipino Couturiers Renee Salud, Shanon Pamaong, Kenneth Barlis, Jaki Penalosa, Ditta Sandico-Ong and Mimi Pimentel; and many more.Norma Carpio is one of the most dynamic leaders of the Filipino community in Canada. The longest sitting President of the Philippine Independence Day Council (2000-2002, 2012-2017). The Founder (1998) and Chairman Emerita (since 2017) of the Mabuhay Philippines Festival.Mrs. Carpio is a recipient of many prestigious awards, selected as the "Most Outstanding Filipinos in Canada, America and Philippines" by Bb. Pilipinas of the World (August 31, 2019); selected as the "Most Oustanding Filipino Seniors Award" by Filipino Centre Toronto (May 2019); PIDC "Tagumpay Award", in honour of her vision, mission and commitment of bringing the community together to promote Philippine arts, culture and lifestyle to a broader audience (August 23, 2018); "Toronto’s Finest Filipino Women" by Filipino Making Waves community News (March 2018); Golden Balangay "Senior Achievement Award" (September 2017); Canadian Asian Fashion Week "Lifetime Award of Excellence" (August 2016); "Outstanding Asian Canadian Award", presented by Canadian Multicultural Council of Asians in Ontario (May 2014); "Most Beautiful Filipino-Canadian Woman Award", presented by IPEN (2014); and "Golden Diamond Jubilee Queen Elizabeth Medal", presented by the Government of Canada (2013). These are just a few of her long list of accolades.

Under Norma's stewardship, Mabuhay Philippines Festival has undergone a remarkable journey, from its auspicious beginning 21 years ago to being the largest celebration of Philippine heritage and culture in Canada  today. PIDC, the organization she helped built, is the umbrella for almost 300 community associations in the Greater Toronto Area.

As the Founder of the Mabuhay Philippines Festival, the year 1998 marked the 100th year anniversary of Philippine Independence, she saw a golden opportunity to lobby for the Philippines to become the featured country in Canada's largest annual summer event, the Canadian National Exhibition and she succeded. As the featured country, the Philippines presented 18 days of wholesome, Filipino-themed entertainment. She made sure that the smorgasbord of entertainment was top-notch, high-calibre and world-class. With a number of performers flown in from Manila, Philipines joined by Ontario-based Filipino talents showcased a colourful and energetic display of well-executed entertainment.

Norma Carpio believed that the inaugural presentation of the Mabuhay Philippines Festival was the first Filipino festival held in Canada, a world-class event which also served to highlight the talents and achievements of the Filipinos around the world.

Through the years, Mabuhay Philippines Festival had the reputation of being a colourful spectacle that takes the audience to a kaleidoscope of Philippine history, arts and culture, showcasing the many talents of Filipino-Canadians, whether they are musicians, singers, dancers, and entertainers, to give the "best of the best", as a real treat to everyone.

On what her leadership has achieved and aims to achieve is that: Norma helped found PIDC: her original task is to celebrate Philippine Independence Day. She believed that through her leadership, PIDC has evolved into an organization that puts together large events, such as the "Annual Salu-Salo sa Earl Bales Park Community Pot Luck Picnic"; the "Mabuhay Golf"; the "Mabuhay Cup Invitational Baskeball Tournament"; The "Miss, Little Miss and Mrs. Philippines" beauty pageants; the Philipine Independence Day "Flag Raising" event and the 21-year old annual "Mabuhay Philippines Festival".

In addition to her duties and responsibilities with PIDC, she had also successfully delivered a multiple fundraising events to help with calamities in the Philippines, and as well as, helped eradicate its poverty through her partnership with Gawad Kalinga (GK Canada). With determination and this vision to continuously promote the Philippines throughout the Filipino community and the Canadian mainstream society, Filipino-Canadians have gradually gained recognition and become prominent, that they do deserve.

"It is my hope that through these events, members of the Filipino community may foster unity with one another. Truly, we are all united in one culture, tradition, heritage and history. We aim to focus on our similarities, rather than our differences, in order to gain a better understanding of each other", said Norma Carpio.
